SR W Class
The SR W Class was a series of 15 three-cylinder 2-6-4 side-tank locomotives designed by Richard Maunsell and built at Ashford Works between 1931 and 1936, specifically designed for the heavy cross-London freight transfer workings that moved goods wagons between the various London freight depots, yards, and interchange points using the difficult and congested freight routes through the capital. The W Class was a more powerful derivative of the U Class 2-6-0 design, applying three cylinders for smoother power delivery on the heavy inter-yard transfer workings and fitting side tanks rather than a tender to give the flexibility needed for the frequent directional changes of yard-to-yard transfer freight.
The cross-London freight transfer requirement was a significant operational challenge for the Southern Railway: goods originating or destined for points across the SR's extensive network had to be moved through London between the various terminal yards and freight facilities, using a combination of the SR's own routes and the freight connections through the north and west London freight lines. This work demanded locomotives capable of hauling heavy freight trains over the congested through-London freight lines while also being able to run bunker-first for extended periods on directional reversals — making the tank engine configuration more suitable than a tender locomotive for this specific duty.
The W Class gave reliable service on SR and subsequently BR cross-London transfer freight working through the 1930s, 1940s, and into the 1950s. None was preserved, though the W Class represents an interesting specialist application of the Maunsell 2-6-4 concept to a heavy urban freight transfer duty.
Design and development
Maunsell designed the W Class at Ashford in 1930–31 as a three-cylinder 2-6-4T for SR cross-London freight transfer, adapting the U Class boiler and cylinders to a tank engine configuration suited to the frequent direction changes of yard transfer working. 15 built at Ashford 1931–36.
Service and withdrawals
W Class worked SR and BR(S) cross-London freight transfer from 1931. BR withdrew all in the 1960s. None preserved.
