MS&LR Class 6AI
The MS&LR Class 6AI was a series of inside-cylinder 0-6-0 goods tender locomotives designed by Thomas Parker, Locomotive Superintendent of the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway from 1886 to 1893, built from 1888 as the MS&LR's standard goods engine for the railway's extensive freight operation across the South Yorkshire coalfields, the Sheffield steel district, and the industrial towns of the network. Parker's standardised 0-6-0 goods design provided the workhorse freight capacity for one of the most intensively industrialised railway networks in Britain.
The MS&LR's freight traffic was dominated by the movement of coal from the South Yorkshire and North Nottinghamshire coalfields to the Sheffield furnaces and the Humber ports at Grimsby and Hull, by steel and engineering products from the Sheffield district, and by the general merchandise traffic of the densely populated industrial corridor between Manchester, Sheffield, and the Lincolnshire coast. Parker's Class 6AI addressed this demand with a straightforward, robust inside-cylinder 0-6-0 suited to the sustained heavy goods work of the MS&LR's coalfield and industrial routes.
The Class 6AI gave reliable service on MS&LR goods duties and passed to the Great Central Railway in 1897 when the MS&LR renamed itself on opening its London Extension to Marylebone. The GCR continued the class on freight duties until their progressive withdrawal and replacement by Robinson's more modern goods types. None was preserved.
Design and development
Parker designed the Class 6AI at Gorton Works in 1887–88 as the MS&LR's standard goods 0-6-0. The straightforward inside-cylinder design gave reliable and economical freight performance on the MS&LR's demanding industrial network. The railway renamed itself the Great Central Railway in 1897 on opening its London Extension.
Service and withdrawals
Class 6AI worked MS&LR and GCR goods duties from 1888. Progressively replaced by Robinson's GCR goods types from the early 1900s; all withdrawn by c.1915. None preserved.
