LNER D11/2 Director
The LNER D11/2 Director Class was a series of eleven inside-cylinder 4-4-0 express passenger locomotives built by the North British Locomotive Company in 1924 to the Great Central Railway Director Class design, ordered by the LNER to provide additional express motive power for the former-North British Railway routes in Scotland — the Edinburgh–Glasgow Queen Street services and the Waverley Route between Edinburgh and Carlisle — where the Director's moderate axle loading was compatible with the NBR's lightly-laid track.
The original GCR Director Class (D11/1) had been designed by John G. Robinson in 1913 and named after directors of the GCR and characters from Sir Walter Scott's novels, giving them a distinctive Scottish literary identity even before they crossed the border. The LNER's decision to order further examples specifically for Scottish service — the D11/2 — reflected both the quality of Robinson's design and the shortage of suitable express motive power for the ex-NBR routes in the early Grouping period. The D11/2 examples were appropriately named after characters from Scott's novels to reflect their Scottish operational territory: Wizard of the Moor, Laird of Balmawhapple, Kettledrummle, Luckie Mucklebackit, and others from the Waverley novels.
One example of the D11/1 Director Class, 506 Butler-Henderson, is preserved at the Barrow Hill Roundhouse. The D11/2 examples are not preserved.
Design and development
The D11/2 was a batch of 11 Robinson Director Class 4-4-0s ordered by the LNER in 1924 from North British Locomotive Company for Scottish express working, where their light axle load was compatible with NBR track. Named after Walter Scott's Waverley novel characters, reflecting their Scottish territory.
Service and withdrawals
D11/2s worked ex-NBR Edinburgh–Glasgow and Waverley Route express services from 1924. BR continued them on Scottish express duties until withdrawal 1958–62. None of the D11/2 Scottish batch preserved; D11/1 Butler-Henderson at Barrow Hill.
