GCR 11D Class

The GCR Class 11D was a series of superheated inside-cylinder 4-4-0 express passenger locomotives designed by John George Robinson and introduced in 1904 at Gorton Works, representing Robinson's systematic application of superheating technology to the Great Central Railway's 4-4-0 express fleet. The 11D was a development of the 11A Class with the addition of a Schmidt superheater, updating the GCR's inside-cylinder 4-4-0 tradition with the thermal efficiency improvements that superheating was demonstrating across British and European railway practice in the early 1900s.

The superheater significantly improved the 11D's thermal efficiency over the saturated 11A, allowing the same cylinder volume to produce more work from less steam. The practical effect on the GCR's London Extension services was lower coal and water consumption per mile and better sustained performance on the demanding schedules between Marylebone and the Midlands. The 11D Atlantics and 4-4-0s were Robinson's express fleet in the early twentieth century, before the introduction of his larger Director and Sir Sam Fay 4-6-0 designs.

After the 1923 Grouping the 11D class passed to the LNER. None was preserved, but Robinson's subsequent GCR Director 4-4-0 — the direct development of the 11D concept into a more powerful and refined design — survives in preservation as LNER Class D11, with examples at the Great Central Railway and elsewhere.
