The BR Class 52 'Western' was a series of 74 diesel-hydraulic C-C locomotives built by British Railways at Swindon and Crewe Works between 1961 and 1964, named after qualities and geographical features of the West of England that gave the class its Western collective name — Western Champion, Western Fusilier, Western Ruler, Western Monarch, and 70 others — and forming the flagship express locomotive of the Western Region's celebrated diesel-hydraulic fleet — see the main BR Class 52 Western entry for full details.
