'L&YR design office' is used in this encyclopedia for Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway locomotive classes designed by the company's engineering organisation at Horwich Works under John Aspinall, Henry Hoy and George Hughes. Horwich (laid out by Aspinall and opened 1887) was one of the most modern late-Victorian locomotive works in Britain.
