Henry Hoy

Biography

Henry Albert Hoy (1855–1910) was a British locomotive engineer who served as Chief Mechanical Engineer of the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway from 1899 to 1904, between the tenures of John Aspinall and George Hughes.

Born at Manchester on 18 December 1855, Hoy was apprenticed at Horwich and rose to Works Manager before succeeding Aspinall (who became General Manager). His L&YR designs included an 0-8-0 mineral engine and improvements to the Aspinall Atlantic. He left the L&YR in 1904 to become Manager of Beyer, Peacock & Co., the Manchester locomotive builders, where he remained until his death on 22 May 1910.
