George Armstrong

Biography

George Armstrong (1822–1901) was a British locomotive engineer, younger brother of Joseph Armstrong, who served as Locomotive Superintendent of the Great Western Railway's Northern Division at Stafford Road Works, Wolverhampton, from 1864 until 1897, a tenure of 33 years.

Born at Bewcastle, Cumberland on 5 April 1822, George was apprenticed alongside his brother and followed him through the Liverpool & Manchester and Shrewsbury & Birmingham railways before being given charge of Wolverhampton when Joseph moved to Swindon. The Wolverhampton works built smaller engines, particularly the celebrated 'Wolverhampton Tank' 0-6-0 saddle and pannier tanks, for the GWR's standard-gauge mileage in the West Midlands, and George ran his fiefdom with considerable independence from Swindon. He retired in 1897 at the age of 75 and died at Wolverhampton on 11 July 1901.
