BR Southern Region

'BR Southern Region' is used in this encyclopedia for traction projects led by the British Railways Southern Region engineering organisation. The Region had a strong third-rail electric tradition inherited from the Southern Railway under Bulleid, and from the early 1950s extended 750 V dc electrification east through Kent and south to Bournemouth and Weymouth. Notable Southern Region locomotive projects included the Class 71, Class 73 and Class 74 electro-diesel and electric locomotives, all designed at BR Eastleigh but procured through a Region engineering office.
