BR Crewe
Biography
BR Crewe (the British Railways London Midland Region design office at Crewe Works) inherited the mechanical engineering office of the LMS, itself the heir of the LNWR engineering tradition under Webb, Bowen Cooke and Stanier. Crewe was responsible for the design and construction of the BR Standard Class 5 4-6-0 and the unique Duke of Gloucester Pacific, and from the late 1950s for several diesel and electric locomotive classes.
The works survived the run-down of British Railways' in-house engineering capacity and continues today (as Alstom's UK heavy-overhaul base) on the same site.
