Sharp, Roberts & Co. (Manchester)

About

Sharp, Roberts & Co. was a Manchester engineering firm founded in 1823 by Thomas Sharp and the inventor Richard Roberts. The firm operated the Atlas Works in Great Bridgewater Street, Manchester, and was best known for Roberts's machine-tool inventions, particularly the self-acting mule for cotton spinning, and for very early experiments in locomotive design.

The firm built one of the locomotives for the Liverpool & Manchester Railway's Rainhill Trials period, but Roberts preferred to concentrate on machine tools. The firm split in 1828, with Sharp continuing the locomotive business as Sharp Brothers and Roberts taking the machine-tool side as Roberts & Co.
