Port Talbot Railway & Docks Company

About

The Port Talbot Railway and Docks Company (PTR&D) was a South Wales pre-grouping railway and docks operator incorporated in 1894 to handle the coal export traffic from the Maesteg coalfield to the new docks at Port Talbot. The system ran from Tonygroes Junction (on the GWR South Wales main line) inland through Pontrhydyfen and Cymmer to Maesteg.

The PTR&D operated a small fleet of contractor-built tank engines for its dock and mineral working. At Grouping on 1 January 1923 the company became part of the GWR. The original main line closed in stages from 1962 to 1980; Port Talbot Docks remain in use today, primarily for the Port Talbot Steelworks.
