77, South African Railways NGG13 Garratt

An ex-South African Railways Class NGG13 Garratt with an interesting build history: it was built in 1928 by Hanomag of Hannover, Germany, as works number 10629, at a time when SAR was placing Garratt orders with German builders rather than with Beyer Peacock in Manchester.

Beyer Peacock held the Garratt patent and was paid royalties on every Garratt built worldwide, but in the political climate of South Africa's 1924 Pact government the actual construction contracts went to Hanomag. The Class NGG13 was the result, twelve engines built between 1927 and 1929, the predecessor of the larger and far more numerous NG/G16 that followed from 1937.

77 worked SAR's 2 ft gauge Natal narrow-gauge branches for decades, was repatriated to Britain in preservation, and was at the Brecon Mountain Railway before moving to the Exmoor Steam Railway at Bratton Fleming in 2002.
