Phoenix

Design and development

Phoenix was one of the first batch of locomotives delivered to the Liverpool & Manchester Railway in 1830 by Robert Stephenson & Co., refined from the Rocket design with smoother running and better steaming. Together with North Star and Dart, it formed the L&MR's earliest motive power.

Service and withdrawals

Phoenix worked the Liverpool & Manchester Railway from its September 1830 opening, hauling passenger trains over the Rainhill incline and across Chat Moss. Like its sisters, the engine was withdrawn during the 1830s as more capable Planet-pattern engines came into service. Not preserved.

Identification features
