NER Class Z [LNER C11]

The NER Class Z, designated LNER C11 after the 1923 Grouping, was a series of three-cylinder simple-expansion 4-4-2 side-tank locomotives designed by Vincent Raven and built at Darlington Works from 1907 for the North Eastern Railway's intensive suburban passenger services in the York, Newcastle, and Tyneside areas, applying Raven's characteristic three-cylinder philosophy to a suburban tank locomotive and giving the NER's suburban fleet a smoothness and power delivery well suited to the frequent-stop, rapid-acceleration demands of suburban working.

Raven designed the Class Z with three cylinders for the same fundamental reason he applied three cylinders to the Z Atlantic and the Y freight tank: the smooth, balanced six-impulse power delivery of the three-cylinder arrangement was particularly valuable for suburban work where the locomotive was constantly accelerating from rest, and the reduced hammer-blow on the track minimised wear on the urban and suburban track layouts where the NER's Tyneside services ran. The 4-4-2T Atlantic tank wheel arrangement gave four coupled wheels for good starting adhesion and a trailing bogie for stability at the moderate speeds of suburban running, while the side tanks provided sufficient water for the turn-round times of the intensive Tyneside suburban services.

The Class Z and its developed subclass Z1 gave reliable and effective service on NER suburban duties, and the LNER classified both as C11 after the Grouping. Several examples survived into BR ownership. None was preserved.
