NBR G7 Class

The North British Railway G7 Class was a series of inside-cylinder 0-4-4 side-tank locomotives designed by Matthew Holmes and built at Cowlairs Works from 1879 and 1889 for the North British Railway's suburban passenger services and branch line working in Scotland. The 0-4-4T wheel arrangement — four coupled driving wheels and a trailing bogie — gave the G7 a good balance of adhesion for the frequent starting and stopping of suburban service and stability at the moderate running speeds of branch and suburban working, while the side tanks provided adequate water capacity for turns without tendering.

The North British Railway served a dense suburban and commuter network around Edinburgh and Glasgow, with services on the Edinburgh Suburban Circle, the Waverley route stopping services, the lines to Musselburgh and Granton, and the various Glasgow suburban services that the NBR operated in competition with the Caledonian Railway. The G7 Class provided the motive power for these services alongside Holmes's other tank engine types, giving the NBR a capable and reliable suburban fleet that served the growing Victorian suburban communities around Edinburgh and along the Forth estuary.

Holmes continued building the G7 Class in batches through the late 1880s, and the class gave reliable service on NBR suburban duties through the Victorian and Edwardian periods. Reid and then the LNER replaced the older Holmes tanks with more modern types as the suburban services were electrified or dieselised. None of the G7 Class examples was preserved.
