Midland Railway 3835 Class

The Midland Railway 3835 Class was a series of inside-cylinder 0-6-0 goods tender locomotives designed by Henry Fowler at Derby Works, introduced from 1911 as a development of the Midland Railway's long-established Johnson 0-6-0 goods tradition, and continuing the Midland's policy of gradual evolution rather than radical innovation in its goods locomotive fleet. The 3835 Class incorporated a superheated boiler — a significant improvement over the saturated Johnson types that had been the Midland's standard goods engine through the 1880s and 1890s — and represented Fowler's systematic application of superheating technology to the Derby goods locomotive programme.

Fowler had become Midland CME in 1909 and recognised that superheating offered substantial fuel economy advantages that had been demonstrated across British and continental practice. The 3835 Class applied Schmidt superheating to a 0-6-0 goods tender locomotive of broadly conventional Midland proportions, giving meaningfully better steam economy on the sustained goods working of the Midland's extensive freight network — the coal traffic from the Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, and Yorkshire coalfields, the general merchandise services between the Midland's major industrial cities, and the agricultural goods of the rural lines the Midland served.

The 3835 Class and the closely related Fowler 4F 0-6-0 that the LMS subsequently built in large numbers represent the culmination of the Derby 0-6-0 goods tradition that had run from Kirtley through Johnson and into the LMS era. After the 1923 Grouping, the LMS continued the Fowler 0-6-0 design as the Class 4F, building over 500 examples and deploying them across the entire LMS system. Several Class 4F examples are preserved on heritage railways, giving the 3835 Class design a lasting heritage presence even though the Midland Railway original examples are not preserved.
