Midland Railway 2441 Class

The Midland Railway 2441 Class was a series of inside-cylinder 0-6-0 saddle and side tank shunting locomotives built for the Midland Railway from the late Victorian era, representing the Midland's standard shunting and yard tank engine and the direct ancestor of the celebrated LMS Class 3F Jinties that became one of the most familiar locomotives on the LMS system. The 2441 Class design was developed through the superintendencies of Johnson and Fowler at Derby, with Henry Fowler refining the design into the standardised 0-6-0T that the LMS built in very large numbers as the Class 3F after the 1923 Grouping.

The Midland Railway's shunting and yard work was extensive: Derby, Leeds, Sheffield, Birmingham, Nottingham, and the major freight and passenger junctions of the Midland's network all required substantial numbers of capable shunting locomotives for marshalling wagons, moving empty coaching stock, and performing the endless variety of yard duties that kept a major railway's freight operation running. The 2441 Class provided this capacity with a robust and simple inside-cylinder 0-6-0T that was easy to maintain at secondary depots and gave reliable service on the repetitive low-speed work of the shunting yard.

The design's real significance became apparent after the 1923 Grouping, when Fowler — who had been Midland CME from 1909 and became LMS CME from 1925 — built the essentially identical LMS Class 3F 0-6-0T Jinty in large numbers for the LMS as a whole. The Jinties became one of the most numerous and familiar LMS shunter types, working at virtually every LMS depot from the Thames to the Clyde. Several Jinties are preserved on heritage railways, giving the 2441 Class design a lasting presence in preservation even though none of the original Midland Railway examples survived.
