The Rainhill Trials of October 1829 were the competitive locomotive trials held on the Liverpool and Manchester Railway to select the motive power for the world's first inter-city steam railway, won by Robert Stephenson's Rocket — see the Rocket entry for full details of the winning locomotive, and the Sans Pareil entry for Timothy Hackworth's competing locomotive.
