LB&SCR I2 Class
The LB&SCR I2 Class was a series of outside-cylinder 4-4-2 Atlantic side-tank express locomotives built at Brighton Works from 1907, closely related to but distinct from the I1 Class introduced in the same year. The I2 represented a slight variation on the I1 theme — with differences in boiler dimensions and cylinder specifications — providing additional outer-suburban and coastal express capacity for the LBSCR's growing passenger services to the Sussex coast destinations that were becoming increasingly popular as seaside resorts for London's growing population.
The distinction between the I1 and I2 reflects detail differences in boiler specification rather than any fundamental design departure: both were outside-cylinder 4-4-2T Atlantic tanks for the LBSCR's express suburban and coastal duties, and the two classes worked interchangeably on similar services. The I2's slightly different boiler proportions may have been intended to address minor operational characteristics observed with the I1 in early service.
The I2s passed to the Southern Railway in 1923 and continued on secondary express and semi-fast duties alongside the I1s. None was preserved.
