L&YR Class 28

The Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Class 28 was a series of superheated inside-cylinder 0-6-0 goods locomotives designed by George Hughes and built at Horwich Works from 1913, representing the final and most developed of the L&YR's standard goods 0-6-0 classes. The Class 28 incorporated superheating from new — an important advance over the earlier Class 27 that gave significantly better thermal efficiency and reduced coal and water consumption per mile on the L&YR's intensive goods working.

By 1913 superheating had been demonstrated across British locomotive practice as a worthwhile investment on both passenger and goods engines, and Hughes's decision to specify it for the Class 28 from the outset reflected the widespread adoption of the Schmidt superheater across the industry. The superheated Class 28 gave better performance than the saturated Class 27 on the sustained goods working of the L&YR's mineral and general freight, and the class was built in moderate numbers for the railway's needs in the years immediately before and during the First World War.

The Class 28s passed to the LMS at the 1923 Grouping and continued on former-L&YR freight duties. None was preserved.

Design and development

Hughes designed the Class 28 at Horwich in 1912–13 as the superheated development of the Class 27, incorporating the Schmidt superheater from new for improved efficiency on L&YR goods services.

Service and withdrawals

Worked L&YR goods services from 1913. LMS ownership after 1923; withdrawn in the 1930s–40s. None preserved.
