GWR 4300 Class
Design and development
Churchward's 1911 design was a robust two-cylinder 2-6-0 with 5 ft 8 in coupled wheels, GWR Standard No. 4 boiler, and Belpaire firebox. The 4300 class became the GWR's standard mixed-traffic engine — equally at home on a stopping passenger or heavy goods. 342 were built between 1911 and 1932; later batches (the 6300, 7300 and 9300 subclasses) had progressive detail improvements.
Service and withdrawals
The 4300s worked GWR mixed-traffic services across the system from 1911 to the 1960s. Several have been preserved on heritage railways, where their power and reliability suit them to mainline-quality heritage operations.
