Diligence

Diligence was an early colliery locomotive built around 1826–27 for the Hetton Colliery Railway in County Durham, one of the pioneering colliery lines that helped establish practical steam locomotive operation in the years before the Liverpool and Manchester Railway opened in 1830. The Hetton Colliery Railway was itself historically significant: opened in 1822, it was one of the first railways to use steam traction throughout rather than relying on inclined planes worked by stationary engines, and its principal engines were designed and supplied under the supervision of George Stephenson.

Diligence was one of a small fleet of steam locomotives working the Hetton line, which carried coal from the collieries around Hetton-le-Hole southward to the River Wear at Sunderland for loading onto ships. The geography of the route — descending from the collieries to the river with intermediate level sections — combined locomotive working on the level stretches with rope-worked inclined planes on the steepest gradients, a mixed-mode operation typical of early colliery railways where locomotive technology was not yet reliable enough for sustained working on steep grades.

The early Hetton locomotives including Diligence were 0-4-0 designs, with four coupled driving wheels giving adequate adhesion for the colliery haulage work. The boiler and cylinder arrangements were of the early Stephenson pattern — vertical cylinders, relatively low boiler pressure, and the direct-coupled drive that was standard before the development of the connecting rod and crank arrangements of the Rocket-era and later locomotives. Diligence itself was not preserved and no detailed technical record specific to this locomotive survives, as distinct from the general Hetton Colliery Railway engineering records.
