The BR Class 84 (AL4) was one of five pilot-scheme 25 kV AC electric locomotive types built for the WCML electrification in the early 1960s — see the main BR Class 84 entry for full details. Built by North British Locomotive Co. of Glasgow with GEC electrical equipment, the Class 84 was ten locomotives strong and had a particularly troubled service record due to the NBL's financial difficulties (the firm collapsed in 1962) and consequent difficulties obtaining spares and support. One example, 84001, is preserved at the Electric Railway Museum, Baginton.
