The BR Class 83 (AL3) was one of five pilot-scheme 25 kV 50 Hz AC electric locomotive types built for the West Coast Main Line electrification in the early 1960s — see the main BR Class 83 entry for full details. Built by English Electric with their own electrical equipment, the Class 83 was ten locomotives strong. One example, 83012, is preserved at the Electric Railway Museum, Baginton.
