class-07-ruston
The BR Class 07 was a series of diesel-electric 0-6-0 shunting locomotives built by Ruston & Hornsby of Lincoln between 1962 and 1965 specifically for the Southern Region of British Railways, where the third-rail 650 V DC electrification of much of the SR network meant that a conventional diesel shunter with long fuel-carrying capability was less critical than a locomotive that could be easily adapted to the electrified track environment. The Class 07 used a 275 bhp Paxman diesel engine driving electric traction motors via a generator — the diesel-electric transmission giving precise low-speed control for shunting movements. See also the main BR Class 07 entry for full details.
One example, D2767, is preserved and represents the Class 07 in the heritage fleet.
