Massey Bromley

Biography

Massey Bromley (1846–1889) was a British locomotive engineer who served briefly as Locomotive Superintendent of the Great Eastern Railway at Stratford Works from January 1878 until his resignation in March 1881. His brief tenure produced the GER 'Bromley' 7-foot 4-2-2 single-driver express engines and the 0-6-0 'Y14' goods (later GER J15, LNER J15), the latter going on to be one of the GER's most numerous and longest-lived classes.

Born at Wallingford, Berkshire on 8 March 1846, Bromley was educated at Westminster and apprenticed in the GER's Carriage & Wagon Works under James Massey Bromley (his father) before being promoted to the senior post on the resignation of S. W. Johnson.

He resigned in 1881 to set up in private engineering practice in London. He was killed at Eastbourne on 9 June 1889 when accidentally knocked down by a horse-drawn cart.
