Biography

'LNER design office' is used in this encyclopedia for London and North Eastern Railway locomotive classes designed by the company's central engineering organisation under Gresley, Thompson and Peppercorn. The principal design works were Doncaster (East Coast main line and the headquarters office), Darlington (North Eastern Area), and Stratford and Cowlairs for southern and Scottish work respectively.

Locomotives designed

LMS Diesel Shunters — Generic reference to LMS 0-6-0 diesel-electric shunters (1934–1944), the LMS development that culminated in the BR Class 08 — by far the most numerous British diesel locomotive class. Several preserved across heritage railways.
LNER 26000 Tommy — Gresley's 1941 LNER prototype Bo+Bo electric locomotive No. 6701 (BR 26000) "Tommy" — built for the projected Manchester–Sheffield (Woodhead) electrification, but spent the war loaned to Dutch Railways before returning in 1952. Designed for 1500 V DC overhead. Class EM1 / EM2. 26000 "Tommy" preserved at the National Railway Museum.
LNER EB1 Class — Raven's 1914 NER EB1 class — Raven's mineral electric for the NER's Shildon–Newport mineral line electrification. Bo-Bo. 10 built. The line was de-electrified in 1935; locomotives stored, then scrapped.
LNER EB2 Class — Reference to LNER EB2 class — likely Raven NER electric 0-4-4-0 of 1932. None preserved.
LNER EM2 — BR Class 77 (originally LNER class EM2) Co-Co electric express locomotives for the Manchester–Sheffield Woodhead route, built 1953–54. 7 built. After the Woodhead closure of 1981 the class was sold to Nederlandse Spoorwegen, where they ran for several more years. Three preserved: 27000 "Electra", 27001 "Ariadne", 27003 "Diana". 27000 is at the Midland Railway Centre.
