Kitson firm

Biography

Kitson & Co. (sometimes Kitson, Thompson & Hewitson, and afterwards Kitson & Co. Ltd.) of the Airedale Foundry, Leeds, was a major nineteenth-century British locomotive builder, founded in 1838 by James Kitson. The firm built locomotives for British and overseas railways and pioneered the Kitson-Meyer articulated locomotive in the 1890s. Kitson went into receivership in 1934 and the works closed in 1938.

The firm's products included engines for the Liverpool Overhead Railway electrification and a long list of small industrial 0-4-0 and 0-6-0 saddle tanks.
