Biography

Captain Hewitt Pearson Montague Beames (1875–1948) was a British locomotive engineer who served as the last Chief Mechanical Engineer of the London and North Western Railway from October 1920 until the LNWR's amalgamation into the LMS in 1922. His brief tenure followed the death in office of Charles Bowen Cooke; his most notable design was the LNWR 'Prince of Wales Tank' 4-6-2T.

Born at County Wexford, Ireland on 22 April 1875, Beames was the son of a Royal Navy captain and was educated at Marlborough. He was apprenticed at Crewe under Francis Webb in 1893 and rose to Works Manager. He served as a Captain in the Royal Engineers in the First World War. After Grouping he was Deputy CME of the LMS under Hughes, Fowler and Stanier until his retirement in 1934. He died at Crewe on 21 April 1948.
