Caledonian design office

'Caledonian design office' is used in this encyclopedia for Caledonian Railway locomotive classes designed by the company's engineering organisation at St Rollox Works, Glasgow. Successive Locomotive Superintendents included Benjamin Conner, Dugald Drummond, Hugh Smellie and J. F. McIntosh. The Caledonian's distinctive 'Caledonian Blue' livery and uniform house style gave the railway one of the most recognisable identities in pre-Grouping Britain.
