BRCW
Biography
The Birmingham Railway Carriage and Wagon Company (BRCW) was a British carriage, wagon and (latterly) locomotive builder based at the Smethwick Works on the western edge of Birmingham. Founded in 1854 from earlier carriage-building firms, BRCW supplied carriages to most British railways and exported widely. From the 1950s it built BR diesel-electric main-line locomotives, including the BR Class 26, Class 27 and Class 33 for the Southern Region.
BRCW went into voluntary liquidation in 1963, partly as a result of BR's withdrawal of new orders, and the works closed soon afterwards.
