BR/Leyland

Biography

'BR/Leyland' is used in this encyclopedia for the joint design and construction partnership between British Railways and Leyland Vehicles (latterly Leyland Bus) of Workington and Wolverton, which produced the Class 140 prototype 'Railbus' and the production Class 141, 142, 143 and 144 Pacer two-car diesel multiple-units of the early 1980s. The Pacers used Leyland National bus body shells mounted on four-wheel rail underframes, an unconventional and controversial economy that nevertheless enabled BR to replace its ageing first-generation DMUs on lightly-used regional services.
