BR design team
'BR design team' is used in this encyclopedia as a generic attribution for diesel and electric locomotive classes designed by central British Railways engineering offices — principally the BR Traction and Rolling Stock Development Group and associated central engineering departments — where design responsibility was shared across BR's central organisation rather than being attributable to a single regional works or named chief engineer.
From the 1955 Modernisation Plan onwards, as BR moved from in-house steam locomotive design under Riddles's BR Standard programme to the complex multi-supplier diesel procurement that characterised the late 1950s and 1960s, the central BR engineering team's role increasingly became one of specification, evaluation, and technical integration rather than primary design. BR's central engineers produced the specifications to which private locomotive manufacturers submitted proposals, evaluated and selected designs in the pilot scheme trials, and managed the technical development of successful types into the production fleet.
The BR design team's most enduring contribution was arguably the InterCity 125 High Speed Train, developed from the late 1960s by the BR Research Division and BR Engineering — a genuine in-house design that produced the world's fastest diesel train and transformed inter-city rail travel in Britain. The HST demonstrated that, given the right brief and sufficient engineering resources, BR's central design capability could produce world-leading rolling stock. The team also developed the ill-fated Advanced Passenger Train, a technically innovative but operationally troubled project that pioneered active tilting-train technology eventually applied successfully by Alstom in the Pendolino.
