BR Derby

Biography

BR Derby (the British Railways London Midland Region engineering office at Derby Works) inherited the engineering tradition of the Midland Railway under Kirtley, Johnson, Deeley and Fowler, and the LMS under Stanier and Fairburn. After 1948 Derby was responsible for the design of the early diesel multiple-units that gave 'Derby Lightweights' their name, the Class 24, Class 25 and Class 26 Bo-Bo diesels, and the celebrated Class 44 'Peak' series.
