William Barton Wright
Biography
William Barton Wright (1827–1915) was a British locomotive engineer who served as Locomotive Superintendent of the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway at Miles Platting (later Horwich) from 1875 until 1886. He inherited a varied and worn-out fleet and rationalised it into a small group of standard classes, the most numerous being the Class 25 0-6-0 of which 280 were built, many later rebuilt by John Aspinall as 0-6-2 saddle tanks.
Born at Brislington, Bristol on 7 December 1827, Barton Wright was educated at Bristol Trade School and apprenticed locally before joining the Madras Railway in India. He returned to Britain to take the L&YR senior post on the death of W. Hurst.
He resigned in 1886 to take up consultancy work and was succeeded by Aspinall. He died at Bath on 11 September 1915.
