Alfred John Hill

Biography

Alfred John Hill (1862–1927) was a British locomotive engineer who served as Locomotive Engineer of the Great Eastern Railway at Stratford from May 1912 until the 1923 Grouping. He succeeded Stephen Dewar Holden, son of James Holden, and continued the GER tradition of well-engineered medium-sized locomotives.

Born at Old Ford, London on 18 September 1862, Hill was apprenticed at Stratford and rose through the works. His most enduring design was the GER L77 (LNER N7) 0-6-2T suburban tank of 1915, a powerful and effective engine for the GER's intensive Liverpool Street suburban service that was built in quantity by both the GER and the LNER, eventually totalling 134 examples. He retired at the Grouping and died at Loughton, Essex on 8 August 1927.
